Filming of The Coup in Chiang Mai

The big news for the past few weeks is the new Hollywood production being filmed right here in Chiang Mai called The Coup. Don't be surprised if you see Owen Wilson one of the stars in the movie walking around he's even got a double here doing stunts as well. Most of the filming has been done around a lot of the hotels in the city including the Imperial Mae Ping hotel. Apparently the movie is along the same lines as the movie Taken, in The Coup it's an american family that moved to South East Asia but a coup in their new country happens and now foreigners are being killed by ruthless mercenaries. Sounds like a good movie and although the production company assure us that no mention of the country Thailand will be in the film even an idiot will figure out it's Thailand. Think about it "The Coup" in South East Asia, Asian dudes killing foreigners sounds a hell of a lot like Thailand to me! Unlike the Chinese film "lost in translation" I don't think this movie is going to make anyone wanna come to Thailand anytime soon. Anyway the crew of the film have been super strict about photos. Big shout out to Dee for getting these photos at least, thanks mate.

Video of the week - Scammed for 46,000 baht

Shout out to Micheal who sent me the video! 4 hours in a Karaoke bar in Chiang Mai apparently costs more than 10,000 baht an hour...yeah right. Even if girl drinks are 250 baht each this poor sucker would have to buy them more than 130 drinks. That's just impossible! See the Tom in this video, yeah wish this guy would have called me up his Thai is pretty bad after 4-5 years in Thailand so when they ask him what exactly is wrong with the bill he just says overcharge. The news reporter on this story is too scared to name the shop involved in the original news story. Phuket as Tuk Tuk scams, Pattaya jet ski scams well Chiang Mai has the Karaoke scam. Funnily enough I was at Aie Karaoke one night whne they tried to add 3000 baht to my bill, I laughed told them it's illegal to charge me that i'm not paying. Noone beat me up! If you're a VIP member remember only to go to the clubs marked on the map all others will screw you over, good luck. In the end this guy paid 20,000 baht. Too bad he doesn't read this site.

Book of the week - Pattaya Beach

pattaya beach

Almost every man who has visited or lived in Thailand has book just waiting to be written. In the case of author John Elray, that book takes the form of a first rate novel that accurately portrays the personalities, peculiarities, and problems the average Farang finds in the Land of Smiles.

In Pattaya Beach, Fah, a twenty-two year-old farm girl from Thailand's rural northeast moves to Pattaya City to do the one thing that has any hope of bringing her decent money – work in the sex trade. Her goal: land a well to do foreigner who can deliver her and her family from a subsistence life. Ed, a recent arrival from America, looks like he might just be the one. What Fah doesn’t know, however, is that Ed is a deeply disturbed man who has traveled to Thailand to kill his nemesis, Bill (Fah's employer), in retaliation for an imagined betrayal. What Ed doesn't know is that he's about to fall in love – and that's when all the trouble begins.

John Elray’s Pattaya Beach is a tutorial in excellent writing, well plotted with dialog that flows naturally and quirky characters that endear themselves to you… even the nasty ones.

Movie of the week - Ender's Game

OK so I was a bit cheap in not going to the movies for this but I was discouraged because I went to see the movie Gravity and honestly I was disappointed. I can't understand why the gravity movie sold out more than this movie. I really enjoyed it. Torrent.

Thai Word of the week - ทะเยอทะยาน

Have you tried to use a translator? I know the hardware translators work better than the online ones that said Google does do a good one with this translation. Pronounced "Tayer Tayahn" Means ambitious. *Tip: When you have enough basic Thai instead of going to the dictionary to figure out what something means ask a Thai person to explain this way you'll practice your Thai as well as understand the true meaning. Going to the dictionary is like trying to remember a phone number. Understand the true meaning of what your saying. This particular word I would explain in Thai as someone who is diligent and dreams big.

Thai Song of the Week - 25 Hours

Question of the Week

This week i was asked what a good boutique hotel in Bangkok is if you've read long enough I recommend Sasha Uno but because it's high season it's going to be difficult to get a room, instead you might want to check out The Muse.

In that guy’s defence, there are many people who’ve been here far longer who can’t speak Thai that well. He makes the basic point pretty clear: “How can it possibly be that much money for 4 hours?”. A more helpful policeman might have asked the girls the same question…

His Thai’s not that bad for someone who’s been here 4-5 years, though possibly if he knew how to be bit more polite he’d have got further. He makes his basic point fairly clear: “How could it possibly be 46,000 Baht for 4 hours?”. This is where a more sympathetic policeman might have pushed the question with the girls…

Yeah i know some guys worse than his for sure. So OK maybe hes just slow then because when the officer hands him the bill and asks him whats wrong with it. He simply says overcharge look at this 2600 baht 1500 baht. Why doesnt he explain whats wrong with those prices and if he cant read Thai why doesnt he ask? Just says overcharge…so either he is dumb or his Thai is terrible. Probably both.

So simply by you saying it was illegal you got out of 3000B theft but by him saying overcharge he was stuck with 20,000B theft? Because you used a more assertive less wishy washy word? Because you speak better Thai?

Actually his bill should have been around 15-20k. He was in an expensive karaoke room with 2 girls drinking a bottle of vodka with 2 girls he was buying drinks for. He does say hes happy to pay the market rate but he thinks 5000 is OK which it isnt at all and hes been here five years come on. Thats not robbery. But 46k is overcharging. In the end he paud 20k exactly what it should be.

      • Craig November 21, 2013 at 5:20 am #

$670 to spend a few hours drinking with 2 pretty girls? That doesn’t include contact or boom boom does it? That’s just stupid idiocy, why would anyone go all the way to Thailand for that, they can do that at home. No wonder CM is ruined, stupid farang throwing money at women just like in the West.

If you follow my advice and go to the places listed in the VIP area it world cost about 150-200 dollars. A decent club in Thailand with your own bottle by yourself would cost $80 and youll be standing therealone. So in perspective the real cost or what i would pay its a good deal. In america that would cost well over $1000

I read Ender’s Game 20 years ago. It’s recommended reading at US Military Academies. I liked the sequel – Speaker for the Dead more. Looking forward to seeing the movie.

Yeah his thai is awful for being here for 5years. He should know how to say they overcharged in Thai.
That was such a bad scam, stupid girls were trying to explain the bill of 2000 odds and say he always said yes to drinks when asked but she didn’t even attempt how it accumulated to 47,000.

I was in chaingmai a few years ago with my bro, we are both luk Kruengs. For 2bottles of red, free mixers with 4 girls and 3hours in a karaoke place cost us around 4 or 5 k so seems like he still got conned in the end.

  6. Mark S November 22, 2013 at 7:57 am #

Unlucky for the guy. I don’t go to karaoke bars ever but 15-20k for a couple of hours in a room drinking vodka with girls seems insane to me. I didn’t realise that was normal price in some places.
