Hiring Thai University Girls For part-time work

The popular western term "Paying your way through college" does not exist in Thailand. There are some compelling reasons why as well. Firstly Thai parents do not expect nor do they want their children to be working while they study and secondly the way the school system is set up it makes it too difficult to work if your studying at uni.

Why Thai parents don't want their kids to work when they are studying is beyond me. Nearly everyone I know who went to University or College back home had a part time job. Even I worked weekends at my dads car rental company while I went to college. For westerners we enjoy our independence the freedom to do what we want and spend money the way we want to we have a desire to work and get money so we can do the things we want however the reason why Thai university kids get part time work is all but different. They choose to take on part time work for two reasons either to pass the time their not studying or because they'd like to make some money so they don't have to ask their parents for it though you'll see why in a minute that this makes no sense.

I must have hired up to 50 different Thai University girls in the past year and a half and interviewed up to 200 different girls and have learned in the end that it's just a waste of time to hire any of them. For starters the University is no help, I want girls that can work the weekends yet Thai universities make the students go in on the weekend to do mindless things. For example, and this happens a lot, a teacher might take Friday off and then makes the kids go in on a Saturday to do the lesson, they don't care if the students have other commitments they make them go in anyway. This happens at least once a month. The university also holds at least monthly a day where all students have to go in on a Saturday and Sunday to stand around and clap hands, no seriously they do, they have a meeting about god knows what sing songs and clap their hands. I've been to numerous meetings like this over the years because the kids couldn't come to work i wanted to find out why and it was completely pointless and a waste of time, they don't learn anything they say it's team building but no one seems to get it and still stay in their little groups anyway. There is no way to pay your way through college if the schools make you go to these things.

University kids years 1 and 2 are the worse because they have this thing the first three months of term 1 where the year 2 students have to look after the year 1 students. They basically have to go to school and play ridiculous games, paint each others faces in some sort of initiation ritual. Some schools don't do it for 3 months but many do. All the while if you wanted a part time job on the weekend you can't because you have to go in and do this madness. Sure a few days of initiation is OK but to do it every weekend for the first few months is way overkill.

Interviewing a Thai University Girl

The majority of Thai people will never have a written resume, have never heard of giving references and will never have to succumb to a drug test. Knowing who to hire and who not to hire is very difficult because everyone is just as unprepared as the next. For most people who come to a job interview they will bring their school transcripts and think that is sufficient. They may have worked at several places already but have no references and be ill prepared and unwilling to hand over phone numbers of past employees.

Of the hundreds of people i've ever interviewed in Thailand only one person had a written resume.

Most Thai University girls have never worked a day in their life so not having a good reference is expected, however I will never hire a girl unless i get to speak to their parents. If you intend to hire a Thai University girl you must phone her parents. You need to make sure her parents are ok with her working with you. I've asked for girls parents phone numbers before and many times they refuse to give it to me because they say their parents don't want them to work. Additionally if you don't get a repoire with her parents she's more likely to quit very quickly, steal from you or just not show up on important days. Having a repore with her parents means that she is very unlikely to do this because she knows that if she just doesn't show up to work that you'll call her folks. And girls not showing up and quiting and not giving a F to tell you happens all the time but if you have her parents phone number she will make sure she tells you.

Knowing which girls to hire and which ones not to is a real crap shoot. But I've found that the girls that come in with makeup on and their nails done won't last a day unless they are given the job of door greater. These kind of girls will not sweep the floor or do anything unless it's looking pretty or a cashier only job.

I've found girls aged around 16-17 work harder than those aged 19-21 I can't explain why but as soon as the girl turned 19 she became useless.

If your considering hiring Thai university girls then you need to be prepared for them not showing up, quiting on you without saying a word. Not returning uniforms, and being super lazy. The final suggestion i can make is only hire uni girls to work evenings because this is when they are sure to come to work, get full time staff for during the day and give the full time staff a day off on the quiet days, and make sure you contact her parents before you hire.

I initially thought you meant something ‘else’ when I read the title – ‘paying your way through Uni’ often has a different connotation here 😉

    I’m a thai. And That’s so untrue!

Just because you are Thai doesn’t mean it’s not true, but please, enlighten us, what is the truth?

I’m a little unsure how to answer this – it was a little bit of a joke ‘working your way through Uni’ here CAN mean getting a ‘sponsor’ – but CAN also mean ‘working at Wawee’ 🙂

I have lived for 10 years in Thailand and I do NOT agree with anything in this article.
My background in Thailand includes teaching corporate English and teaching at a top university in Bangkok for 3 years.
I suggest the problem lies with the writer of this article, NOT the students that you are employing.

I’m just curious to know what exactly you wanted to hire them for…. I can think of plenty of reasons I’d want to hire them, but then I’m just a pervert…

But I agree, Thai girls are like cats, they like taking life super easy and only ever waking up to eat… still, when you’re so beautiful I guess it’s easy to be lazy, some dumb rich idiot will be happy to pay for you as long as they get a piece of your ass every night of the week

Kinda commical to me. I hired a college grad from Thailand. Quite honestly, she has no drive, little education and she’s very lazy. Offer her an opportunity of a lifetime and all I hear is “How hard her tasks are etc…” Of course all nations have the under achievers and their entrepreneurs, but I would find it hard to believe Thai grads excel over other national grads. Just my opinion..and I’m no expert.

In Thai culture, the majority of the students that have to work while studying undergraduate programs don’t have enough income and working as a part-time student worker will not make a good or even close to the term sufficient income unless they do things like selling their bodies or prostitution.

Parents realize this reality in Thailand. They don’t want their kids to work while studying.

The students are not all lazy but you’re targeting into that kind of girls to be your future possible something… If you really want a diligent worker, you have to make differences from what you are doing now.

I have a different view, it’s impossible for uni students to have a job even if they wanted to because the university makes it compulsory to go to weekend and after school events to clap hands and do stuff that’s unrelated to them getting a degree.
