How to get into trouble in Thailand

It's amazing how many people find themselves becoming victims in Thailand. In the west people live very sheltered lives from home in the car to work and back home again and often their childhoods were the same. For someone without any street smarts Thailand quickly turns into a minefield of scams, heartbreak, and even death.

The easiest way to get yourself into Trouble in Thailand is with alcohol, drugs and sex. Alcohol causes fights, drugs cause jail time and sex often causes theft. Most if not all problems in Thailand are money or drug related same as anywhere in the world really but it's the pettiness of Thailand criminals that catches most people unaware.

Top 10 ways to get into trouble

trouble in Thailand

Take a ladyboy back to your own room

Ladyboys are notorious in Thailand and there is a long line of testimonials from guys who have been drugged and robbed by them. There are short time rooms in every city, keep an eye on your drinks and you'll be fine.

Intoxicated at 4am in the morning and ask a Tuk Tuk to drive you to somewhere to drink.

The reason why a Tuk Tuk driver would want to work in the early hours of the morning is because it's easier to drive around and they can charge more, the same goes for Taxi drivers. If you ask them to take you somewhere they are going to take you to a place they can get commissions and if this means they beat you up as well then tough titties because at this time of night if you don't know where to go then go home.

Wear a lot of jewelry in major tourist destinations

Bag snatching and neckless grabbing is rife in Bangkok, Pattaya, Chiang Mai and Phuket. If you wear a lot of jewelry you instantly become a major target, as a tourist it's better to dress down.

Shouting and being rude to Taxi Drivers

Quick way to end up in hospital is to get really drunk and argue about a $5 fare.

Keeping large sums of money in your hotel room

It's not that uncommon for staff to steal belongings in hotels and if the types of girls you bring back to your room have tattoos like cat scratches on their back then this is an easy way to lose your money. If your hotel doesn't have a safe then it's not safe!

Run out of money

People will literally do anything for money and one position you don't want to find yourself in is down and out in Thailand.

Fall in Love with a Bar Girl

I wonder how many guys are sending money to girls they met at a beer bar or massage parlor? Must be in the tens of thousands. A quick way to lose a lot of money and if you have it to lose then by all means believe she's being faithful.

Invest in a Business

Thailand is full of opportunities for the savvy investor and entrepreneur alike but if you've never started a business before and can't speak a lick of Thai then don't do it here.

Lose your passport

Everyday in Thailand there are hundreds if not thousands of tourists who lose their passports. Often it slips out of the pocket or left at a hotel. Remember to write your contact details in your passport!

Come to the defense of a girl you hardly know

The worst beatings I've seen are from guys who try to be the hero and step in on a domestic. No one likes to see that shit but you need to remember where you are. Whether it's a foreigner or a Thai guy doesn't matter, Thai girls are nuts and while you kick the guy off her she may stab you in the back. You see your bar fine having an argument with another guy then let it play out, don't get involved!

Thai Laws

Thailand law is different to your own country but it's not that different that common sense doesn't prevail. For instance if you take your car or bike to some dodgy backyard mechanic and they do a terrible job or scammed you somehow not much the police can do same in your own country! You have to take them to court. This is where the pettiness of Thai thieves comes in. If you take someone to court it can cost well over $1000 so lots of scams and rip-offs are perpetrated less than the amount it would take to fight for the return of your funds.

Anything criminal in Thailand must be dealt in Thai Language, you can't go to the courts with an agreement made in English you need a Thai translation so make sure any contracts are made in Thai and if you can't read Thai then have a transited translator explain it to you, if it's for a large amount always seek a lawyer.

If you do find yourself a victim of a crime make sure you go to the police station in the vicinity where the crime occurred. If you go to a police station elsewhere they will refer you back to the police station that has jurisdiction over the area where the crime occurred. If you don't speak Thai then you are better off calling 1155 the tourist police who will send someone who can speak your language. Remember if you don't know where you are or where it occurred telling the police is absolutely useless.

When a foreigner gets f’d up you can bet there are drunkenness, extreme late hours, hookers and taxi drivers involved. Stay sober, be someplace by 2 or 3am and don’t argue with taxi drivers and bar girls when you are drunk. Easy!

Walk into a Thai village you’re not familiar with, especially a cul de sac. This is where the farang hater hangs out, he will seize his chance to mock you, or confront you to impress his friends.
Best to just turn around and get out of there.
