Lying Farang

Isn't it amazing how many people lie in Thailand. First you might think that it's the Thai's that lie the most, mainly to save face. But I've found that it's more often than not that the Farang are more likely to lie, and it may not have anything to do with saving face, or does it?

Lying is only the start of the character weakness of many a Farang in Thailand. Cheating, scamming, bullshitting the list goes on. Otherwise honorable people come to Thailand and somehow find their true selves or are they turned into total cunts by Thai society?

While I still believe that the Thailand expat has a much better social standing than an expats in Cambodia I still come across guys on a weekly basis that are just so full of shit they seem to believe their own crap. Sure talk yourself up but don't kid yourself.

Take for example the guy that told me he owns his own clothing line, in reality he sells a few t-shirts and baseball caps on Facebook. Or the professional Thai Kickboxer who in reality trains in his apartment and does exhibition matches against Ladyboys. Or how about the guy who owns a Ferrari in Singapore whom I found out really just took the photo of him sitting  in a car at the Bangkok Motorshow.

Then there's the Farang who live in an alternate reality who's trip report on Pattaya Addicts that shows 20 odd girls all over 30 with 2 kids whom he says are all Maxim models. The Farang who says he lives like a King in Thailand but resides in a 2000 baht 20sqm apartment and waits till closing time at Tops every day to get half priced bread (not a bad idea actually but I think you get the idea).

Telling the truth in Thailand honestly  doesn't get you much. Ever wonder why in Thailand no one will ever come around and ask you if your meal was good? That's because most Thai people will say "yeah good" while keeping face, even if it was terrible! So what's the point of asking? If you said it was shit or found a cockroach in the meal and you told them that you think you'll get the meal for free or have your criticism welcomed? Dream on! May as well lie about it and say the cockroach was super tasty thanks.

The only thing you need to lie about in Thailand is how much money you have. Tell everyone your flat broke.

You can get half price bread at tops at closing time???? That’s awesome. Here I was, being a sucker, buying full priced bread all the time.

I think it’s like buy one get one free, most bakeries do that to clear the last stock. Tops in Chiang Mai always seems to sell out before they do this but the crappy cakes you get a deal 🙁

Don’t forget all the special forces guys who live here. I never realised the army needed 20 stone alcoholics to fill such prestigious positions

    • Chris May 8, 2013 at 6:40 am #

The guy who says his ex-special forces and you find out he was a security guard on the trains.

No truer words spoken than “tell eveyone your flat broke ” unless you want constant pernicious Thai and likeminded Farang losers harrasing you constantly.
I must admit to telling a few expanded truths at times, mainly for my own amusment when I became tired of backpacker types asking, but usually came clean by the end of the story.
You can turn it into a game…humour these types, top their stories with one more fantastic and it gets the creative juices flowing, this is best used when your cornered or as a last resort when it gets too much.

The most common lie is when guys tell you how they met their girlfriend. How many guys actually met their girlfriend at Starbucks???

    • Chris May 8, 2013 at 6:39 am #

But I really did meet her at Starbucks! lol *sarcasm

    • Aussie Jay May 10, 2013 at 10:54 am #

They do meet them at StarBucks !!…..They just omit that they met them on the Internet whilst there…….

  5. Faraday May 8, 2013 at 6:19 am #

I like to embellish things I say slightly to make a story more interesting or fun, but lying is

something I rarely do. The ‘two week millionaires’ are the ones that boil my piss making out

they’re the fucking man & spending baht like idiots thinking the girls are actually impressed.

But there seems to be so many of them & I’m sure the Thais must think we’re all delusional.

They’re called Walts in the UK & are uneducated fools generally wearing a wifebeater.

    • Chris May 8, 2013 at 6:38 am #

It’s very true that most Thai girls if they already have the iPhone they could care less about how much money a guy spends especially on food most girls I know are more happy with a bowl of noodles than they would do with some prime Australian beef.

    • Aussie Jay May 10, 2013 at 10:55 am #

You call them Walts….we call them Wankers……

I feel like I owe you at least one beer for this wealth of information from your website.

  7. Coffee drinker May 8, 2013 at 11:39 pm #

I met my girlfriend at Starbucks. Well actually I met her as she was standing outside of the Starbucks on Sukhumvit soi 5.

It might have to do with the fact that one’s standard of living is *usually* a bit better here than in their home country. Many people try to make it sound like it’s ten times better when it’s just slightly better. Thus, they lie.

I agree with Thai girls not caring about expensive food over their usual noodles and pork. Some even prefer it. I remember I had one girl upset over the fact that I spent 1,000 baht on a Japanese dinner that she didn’t even like…She would have been happier with a 100 baht Thai dinner instead.

    • Faraday May 9, 2013 at 7:04 am #

Yea I was often surprised at first when going with a girl for something to eat. My immediate thought was ‘this’ll be expensive’ but nope we always went for Noodles etc.

Is this because they want to save any money that I spend for themselves, lack of ‘sophistication’ or they don’t want fancy food?

      • Chris May 9, 2013 at 7:15 am #

I think it’s just about Taste, give them some expensive seafood or japanese they’ll dig it, hand them a 1500 baht steak they won’t eat it.

        • Faraday May 9, 2013 at 8:08 am #

..or give them 1500 baht & my ‘steak’ 😉 lol!

      • david May 11, 2013 at 3:04 am #

Clearly none of ye really know much about or really like thai food.
Im a person who loves his steak, but give me a good bowl of noodles
and ill pick them all day long.Thai food is a lot more interesting than
most of what we eat in the west and if your gona live here, people
need to wake up to that. Also in general western food is pretty crap
here. ive sat in restaurants watching friends eating stuff i would not
give to a dog, while enjoying my thai food.so next time ye take yer gf
out for something to eat leave her choose, thats one thing they will
        get right.

My wife and I live here for 15000 baht per month, yes we have our own house. But that would only keep us for 1 week in the UK, if we don’t do anything and don’t have a car.

It’s the Brits who are typically so full of shit! And they are the ones who can cobble together the $ to get to Thailand. I can only imagine what it’s like in wherethefuckshire!

    • Chris May 9, 2013 at 12:45 pm #

I’m surprised by your comment, I don’t think race has anything to do with it, but then I know more Americans than I do brits at the same time I’ve met guys who spew crap from their mouths from all over the globe.

      • Mr. Padet May 9, 2013 at 12:58 pm #

        Agreed.

    • Faraday May 9, 2013 at 12:55 pm #

Well, to a certain extent I agree as some brits are known for being football hooligans, however I don’t think that being “full of shit” is particularly country dependant.

And we do have two of the most prestigious universities & ofc Berkely was a British bishop.

I’m presuming that you’re from umerica.

    • Melvin Thorn May 12, 2013 at 7:49 pm #

Sounds to me you could be a drunken Aussie. Thought we got together the GB pound to get here. Going to Weatherfuckshire today so will let you know, But probably pretty good.
Having worked in Perth Auistralia, San Antonio America and Thailand, I still thinks, other than the cost of living we have the best lifestyle, otherwise why do so many Ausssie, New Zealand, American and Arabs live there.
Go back to the Chang Classic and dream of a better life.

    Greetings from Pakistan.
This post is so interesting to me. I visited thailand this april. I enjoyed alot n can say for sure i m addicted to thailand. I will surely visit thailand again.

I was fascinated by many online bloggers telling how they r living a dream n sleep with different girls everynight without paying a penny etc. But you really revealed that how some of them lie. I also used to think that these people r trying to cover up their shitty life in thailand by making such blog posts . i think i know about the KING u talked abt

Your blog is really nice. Keep it up

  11. egius May 23, 2013 at 9:45 am #

Gets really interesting… Are you refering to the king of thailand…er… the website? 🙂

I’ve been reading a lot before coming to thailand to live there for all this winter. What can I say? in order to live ‘good’, nothing close to a ‘king’, you need to be earning at least 1,5k usd per month remotely. At least. So you know, it gets quite interesting to read the posts (other blogs/websites) online where people brag about living for around 1k usd per month in thailand like real ‘kings’… that’s bullshit.

    • Chris May 23, 2013 at 7:20 pm #

To live with any kind of affluence in Thailand you need to make a minimum of 100,000 baht a month. Anyone else tells you different that are full of shit. Hence this post. Thanks for your comment. Here at Living Thai I keep things real!

      • Krypton June 3, 2013 at 4:07 pm #

That’s why I stay on this website. 🙂

      • Dannyboy6 November 9, 2013 at 10:28 am #

        Exactly…

  12. jim June 1, 2013 at 5:06 am #

Don’t get down to the BKK or Pattaya very often, less than once a year and love listening to all the BS. They know that you know it’s crap, but it re enforces their own fantasy world, strangers on a train who will never meet again.

As for the cost of living, think there is a big difference between living here on some sort of never ending holiday or retirement. Than living here to make a life, living and future, my case wife, 2 kids and it’s no cheaper than when we lived in OZ, just a better standard of living. New car instead of used, bigger house, weekends away, all costs. Jim
