It may have been the first month I was in Thailand when I first met my first semi-professional poker player in Thailand. I have played online poker before when I was living in California and seen the world series of poker on TV but never actually met anyone who was really making a living from playing poker online. That was until I moved to Chiang Mai and have met dozens of guys now over the past few years who at least claim to make a living out of the game.
So I decided to find out what the day in the life of an online poker player in Thailand would be like, I hit up my mate for $50 to send to my account as I found out you can’t use Paypal to transfer money to a poker site (against their policy) and signing up to these ewallet things seems like a hassle. I tried a Netteller account but says I already have one and that was a hassle too. My mate recommends you use a VPN connection and a credit card from another country like Australia. I have a Bangkok Bank Visa card and it seems like it’s blocked for being used on gaming sites. Maybe someone knows a different Bank in Thailand where the Card isn’t blocked?
Since getting money into one of these poker sites I wonder how easy it is to get out! I’m sure I could have overcome those obstacles and if I were serious about it I would have but to just fool around with it it’s a bit of a hassle. For example Netteller would have just been a phone call away. Either way my mate helped me out by transfering some funds to my account.
Now that I had money in my account I was told to learn how to actually play the game. You probably think you know how to play poker but it’s so much more complicated than I thought it was. My mate recommended I learn as much about the game as possible and recommended this site called Poker Strategy. Now this website has the best videos I’ve ever seen on the game. There is so much information on there that I’m still going through it. What the best piece of advice that was given to me was controlling my Bankroll.
The 300 Big Bets rule
I only have $50 so if I play a $50 game it’s all over, my poker career is finished before it started. What Poker Strategy told me is that I need to only play games where the big bets are no more than 300 times more than my bankroll. So I should start at a 5-10 cent game. This makes total sense to me. Only problem is you play for hours and hours and hours only to make a few dollars. This is what happened to me I played all day and into the night and made a measly $18. I’m not exactly about to stop writing this blog to play poker any time soon at that rate.
