Gadget of the Week: Amazon Fire Phone
The Amazon Fire Phone made its debut this month, and its a really wild phone if you read its features list. Its really completely unlike anything else out there on the market, and for a tech junkie like me, its pretty exciting. This phone is actually pretty great for Thailand, making it extremely easy to shop online and help you get a lot of cool features you can get in America but hard to find in other places, like mobile magazines and ebooks. It also has some pretty cool features such as letting you scan any bar code and finding that product on Amazon, a bunch of 1 handed features to make you phone easy to use such as tilt and swivel, which I would like to try, and their new Firefly technology which basically organizes all of your data, and everything on the Amazon website. This phone is really made for America, but if you like to read on you phone and use kindle type apps, it can be good for Thailand, but not my go-to phone.
Destination of the Week: The Pannarai Hotel Udon Thani
Looking for a cheap vacation? Check out Udon Thani. Most people visiting Thailand only hit the 4 major places, Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket, and Chiang mai. Udon Thani is pretty untouched by westerners, most people going are just passing through. You can actually have a pretty good time in Udon Thani on the cheap! I was just searching for hotels and I couldnt find a standard room in the whole province for more than 44 dollars per night. The Pannarai Hotel is arguably the best hotel in the city, offering a great central location, a good pool, and free wifi in every room. A standard room is just 38 dollars a night right now. I highly recommend, even if you are just passing through on your visa run to Vientiane. Read More
Book of the Week: Keep on Running (Poisoned Saints)
A masterclass in Crime Fiction, taking you to places other authors fear to tread. Addressing raw social issues such as addiction and violence, whilst giving you action, humor and on the edge of your seat suspense.
Keep on Running will draw you in to its Far Eastern whirlwind, gnaw at your soul, then spit it out leaving you craving for more. Ben Coulter truly is in a league of his own.
Billy Stone is an ex-Marine and boxing champ living a lavish criminal lifestyle whilst on the run in Thailand. But, when a botched hijacking on the Burmese border leaves three men dead, Billy must make fresh alliances with a feared mafia boss, whilst trying to keep hold of a new-found love and himself out of one of the world’s toughest prisons.
In this follow up to the Amazon number 1 best-seller Poisoned Saints, Billy runs head first into trouble whilst on a marijuana run inside the treacherous Burmese border. Back in Thailand, Billy is forced to make a new deal with a murderous crime lord whilst keeping Islamic terrorists and ruthless Russian gangsters at bay.
As love unsuspectingly enters his life in the form of all American girl next door, Mel, Billy struggles to keep his gang of criminal misfits in line; Che, his old Stambro friend and struggling drug addict, Nate, a former US Marine and Compton psycho and Orly, the laid-back, weed smoking Frenchman.
Can Billy keep up his affluent lifestyle whilst cultivating his new-found romance? Can Che resist the hedonistic delights of South East Asia? In the contrasting land of Buddhism and the death penalty lessons will be learnt. Billy must stay one step ahead of his past whilst out smarting the present, or be forced to Keep on Running.
Movie of the Week: Transformers: Age of Extinction
To be honest, I didn't watch the last few Transformers movies... I just don't like the kid actor in it, Shia Labeouf. I think the only one I actually saw was the first one. But make no mistakes, any blockbuster, action, comic book type movie is HUGE in not just Thailand, but everywhere in Asia. They just don't seem to like a lot of dialogue here and they just love to be wowed by special effects and intense action scenes... Ive seen pre-release reviews of this movie and they haven't been the best, but its going to he HUGE here without a doubt. I just checked movie listings at Promenada and I think they have 6 or 8 screens, Transformers is scheduled to play on all but 2 of the screens for the whole week!
