If you don’t have a 3month visa you may still be able to get a Thai Bank account but you’ll have to do more running around to actually find a bank that will open one for you.
When you open an account you’ll need to pay money for your keycard / debit card if you go to Siam Bank, but bankok bank is probably the best bank to bank with if you want a Visa Debit card which is really helpful if you want to buy something off the internet.
Recently you could use your Bangkok Bank Visa card to purchase credit on gambling sites but i think it will only work a few times before it’s cut out. Gambling is illegal in Thailand even on the internet so don’t use your new bank account to do this, it’s not recommended.
Before you open a Bank account in Thailand
Before you open your Thai Bank account keep this in mind, wherever you open your bank account is where you’ll have to go to close it or do anything substantial like replace your keycard! This is because Thai banking system is localised and if you were to lose your keycard or book you’ll have to go back to the same bank. If you move to a different part of the country, tough luck you’ll have to go back to where you open it, for this reason it’s a good idea if your moving, to close your account and open a new one up.
