I’ve been in Bangkok a little over a year now (though 7 years straight in Thailand). Honestly it’s great to be back in a big city, though Bangkok is much more tame now then when i last lived here in 1996. I think the majority of people who come to Bangkok, just don’t like it, it’s noisy, it’s loud, it’s expensive, and very very hot. The running joke about Bangkok being right next to the sun is no joke.
My roommate is from Florida, he seems unaffected by the weather, i guess because florida is also pretty hot, i’m from a more temperate climate so i guess i feel it more, i’m not sure, but it’s stifingly hot! I first moved here I was in Thonglor, I figured the area suited me fine, kinda reminded me of Nimmanheiman road in Chiang Mai just obviously a lot bigger and way better club options. But quite honestly the cookie cutter rooms and hipster scene isn’t really my style. Another problem with the area is the crappy late night options for food, as someone who typically gets to sleep at 5 am I suggest you look elsewhere like Huay Kwang if you’re on a budget or where I live now around the Nana area. So a little over 8 months ago i left Thonglor and moved to Sukhmivit road Soi 8.
If you want to fuck any of the following:
An African
A Chinese
A Thai
A Japanese
A Deaf Mute
A Ladyboy (or anything in between)
Low class hookers
High class hookers
Street hookers
and Midgets
You can get all this within a 5 minute walk from the Nana BTS area, and that’s just the paid stuff. The real reason to live around this area is for the convenience. Foodland, Villa Market, Tops, and fresh markets near asoke not to mention EVERY delivery service you can imagine, I get meat pies delivered to my door with mash and peas for 9 bucks (special occasions only). Shout out to London Pies whom i highly recommend!
I paid 20,000 a month plus utilities for a tiny room in hipster Thonglor. Now i pay 15,000 which is my share with two mates in a 4 bedroom duplex 2min from the BTS. (not that I use the BTS much as it’s quicker to go most places on a bike or cab.
The larger space allowed me to move in two girls instead of the one (yes the condo actually had a limit to how many people could live in the room) they wouldn’t allow me two chicks so now I live in Nana where it’s kinda expected.
That’s another thing about the area too, my unconventional lifestyle would get too many looks and stares in another area, here you can bring a new chick back 3 times a day and people hardly bat an eyelash.
Loving Bangkok Life!
