Police Checkpoints in Chiang Mai

After many years in Chiang Mai cruising around on the bike I’ve come to realise that the police are doing the same checkpoints at the same time of day or night at the same spot all the time. I havn’t noticed a pattern for when they do the checkpoints but I do know that they have them in the same places around certain times of the days and nights.

Now most times the police checkpoints are made between 9am and midday on weekdays, in the evenings the checks are normally made between midnight and 2am though there are no guarantees on this. The checkpoint on Moonmuang road is normally setup a week before Songkran and new year they are checking people for drugs same as at the Thapae gate checkpoint. Mostly all the other checkpoints are setup for people not wearing a helmet. Sometimes you’ll go through a police checkpoint in Chiang Mai and the police don’t even stop you. This is because they are looking for a particular person or for stolen vehicles that’s why they don’t stop you because you don’t fit the bill.

  1. I think the Police have ‘stepped up’ and I see 80% of people now wearing helmets and before only 10% so this policy has probably saved lives – never thought I would be defending the Thai Police!!! once when I was very near my condo and in a hurry I did not wear one and got stopped – fair do’s… no bribes… I was booked and surrendered my licence which I got back after paying the 500 baht at the local Cop Shop. If it saves lives I’m for it.

      1. yup 500 was the fine – all documented and official that’s why it wasn’t the 200 baht ‘cheaper under the table’ version. Official 500 in the pocket 200 – it’s a good sign I think.

    1. I’ve gotten pulled over so many friggin’ times in Bangkok, for just about every reason. Speeding, using lanes not allowed for motorbikes, no helmet, no license, no registration, you name it.

I never spent more than 150 baht, usually 100, often nothing. Straight to the dude’s palm, done. One must be Chump van Chumpskalicious for a cop not to want to accept a bribe from them.

That or Chiang Mai is a haven for police non-corruption.

  2. There is quite often a daytime checkpoint at Holiday Inn, just opposite Rajaved Hospital. Then there is usually one at night on the road to Nong Hoi, shortly after Holiday Inn.

  3. The intersection at Thepanya hospital, both across from the PTT pump station usually at 9:30 in the morning and 1:30 in the afternoon. If you’re on the PTT side you are good to go, if coming from the Kham Tiang bridge and going straight thru the lights or turning left onto the Maejo road then better be wearing a lid. Hope this helps and yeah Chris it’s now 500bht as of May 1st. Cheers
