Take Money Out in Thailand without ATM Fees

Are you still getting hit by the 180 baht ATM fees the Thai banks charge you? Did you know that there are hundreds of ATM locations around Thailand that won’t charge you ANY Fees to withdraw money. I’m making a commitment lately to reduce money that I don’t really need to spend and the first thing I’ve done is make sure I stop taking money out of regular ATM’s if I’m withdrawing money from overseas. AEON Cash despensors aks ATM machines will take any mastercard or visa card and bank card from around the world WITHOUT charging any fees! I figured it’ll save me hundreds of dollars a year and if you aren’t already taking advantage of it you should start now.

I recently went to the AEON bank in Central Airport Chiang Mai (though closer one for me is really Siam TV on the moat), was super surprised how many people are using these machines check out the line….

  1. Thanks Chris…it boils my urine when I add up all the tx fees every bloody time.

It’s not being cheap to do this, just better money management.

But why give someone else your money when you don’t get anything in return?

    1. For me at least it’s just being lazy instead of planning when i take money out i get trapped into paying the fees. You are right, why give them your money when you don’t have to.

  2. Ah very good to know.

If your Australian and you travel a lot you can also use velocityglobalwallet.com to bpay your money onto the prepaid visa card and keep it in 10 different currencies. The exchange rates were pretty good.

  3. Yeah, but what rate are they exchanging your money at? Could be saving $5 in fees but losing a lot more in exchange rates. Best thing to do is open an account here and then transfer money over via your online banking abroad, once every few months. You get the fairest ex rates and the fee is about 1,000 baht.

    1. It all depends on how much your transfering and how often. The exchange rate on AEON is really good. In most cases i’m transfering money but there are cases where you need money out fast and cases where you’re using an online bank that doesn’t allow bank transfers to Thailand. If you use a card try to use it at the AEON atm.

  4. Are those lines always like that at the AEON atm machines? If so, I would just as soon pay 180 baht rather than wait in a line that long.

  5. This is great! It would have saved me thousands of baht to know this. Those lines bother me a bit, after my pin# got swiped twice and money went to eastern Europe, new card needed, etc. Make sure to cover your hand, and make sure no one is behind you with a camera phone recording you entering your pin#.

  6. If ur an Aussie, you can also get a 28 degrees credit card. You get inter-bank rates and they don’t charge you a conversion fee too. So technically it’s the best rates and no withdrawal fee(from their side). Just BPAY money into the Card and use it as a debit card. No yearly fee too.
And now you mentioned that AEON has no ATM fee, it’s just made it perfect!

  7. Sorry to spoil the party on the 28 degrees card. GE will be moving the goal posts. From the 1/1/2014 ANY cash withdrawal will be charged a new fee of $4 or 3% whichever is greater (capped at $30 per transaction) even if you have positive balance on the account.

    I’m currently looking for alternatives.

  8. Thanks for this. Wish I would have known about this before. Been spending a fortune on Money transfers from back home, between the fees and the rates, you get pummeled sometimes.

  9. This is a shame! The fee is a way too much, and as a foreign customer we can’t say anything, we just can pay, this is too much!
Now the travellers are temped to travel with a big amount of their own money to change in Thailand, the just like easy money, the government or any person, group, authority should spot that!!
    Enough!!

  10. Charles Schwab and Co. refund all ATM fees.
They are a well known financial service company.
You can find them at schwab.com
