How to get away from Songkran Festival 2013

After entering my 5th year of living in Thailand the whole Songkran festival is just way too much, first couple years was fine but now it's just old and I want out. I don't want to get wet, period. How do you get away from the Songkran Festival?

Songkran Festival 2013When is the Songkran Festival Thailand on in 2013?

The Songkran festival is officially from the 13th - 15th 3 days but in many places the festivities are stretched out to over 10 days.

The Songkran Festival would be OK if people didn't throw the near zero degree water as well, this is the killer for me, it's all fun until i get a bucket of this stuff thrown on me and you literally cannot move.

Can you even escape Songkran if you live in Thailand? It's gotta be possible, I thought about going to Cambodia, Loas or even Burma but they too play this crazy game too. Vietnam or Malaysia maybe but those places don't really appeal to me and I'd end up just locking myself up in a room I may as well do that here.

Really is there anywhere I'd really want to go? No, love Thailand, it's the Songkran that's old. Is there really no options? Some things I thought of were:

Go to the temple

Over Songkran weekend this is what lots of people do the general rule is you don't play with water on Temple grounds so these are your safe zones, do you really want to sit at a temple for days though? Some may, most won't.

The Mall

If you can get to the Mall as it opens without getting wet you're doing better than most, most have doors open about 10am. By the time the mall closes most of the water throwing should be at a complete minimal and you could get home safely. There's food there's movies massage shops, there's always a place for beer and drinks easy to keep occupied

VIP Style

Book the yacht from Secrets Pattaya, exclusive resort in Phuket, or a jungle hideaway in Chiang Mai, or the Landmark Sukhumvit Bangkok. There's no water throwing in 5 star resorts and they typically have much or as little as you want. In Thailand you can order anything to your room including girls if the hotel/resort also has a nightclub and shopping center on site you're golden.

Stay At Home

The Day before Songkran festival go to Tops supermarket go to the Markets and stock up on enough food and water to stay in your room and not leave. Funnily enough I'm pretty sure this is what many expats in Thailand do in Thailand after you've been here 5/10/20 years there's bound to be at least one year where you lock yourself in your room for days.

If you wanted to avoid Songkran festival in Thailand 2013 what would you do?

I go to a few places just a bit south of Pattaya such as Bangsare as Pattaya celebrates Songkhran 3 or 4 days after Bangkok. When they start, I return ti Bangkok.

If anything ever makes me leave my home of Thailand forever, it will be Songkran. The original intent was beautiful. But drunk and obnoxious farangs have, of course, ruined it, as they ruin most everything they come in contact with, and it is now just loud, obnoxious, rude, criminal, and out of control. Every year that the Thai government allows it to continue as-is, represents five additional years of struggling to get it under control once they realize that it’s a net negative for Thailand. Every year, now, I simply barricade, because flights out become expensive and booked-full anyway. Hotels out of Songkran influence are jammed (guess I’m not the only Songkran hater). And it has become just too difficult to escape short of Moscow. Singapore thought it would be fun and profitable — now they realize the folly and are trying to walk it back. Lots of luck. Once drunken assholes get a death grip on something it’s very hard to back them off short of literally breaking their arms. I have nothing to offer any of the tens of thousands of angry expats who came to SE Asia to lead a quiet and dignified life, only to have it usurped by sheer madness. Bottom line, the 160,000 baht a drop every month in Thailand no longer gets enjoyed by Thais because I spend nothing during AprilMadness. I hide, watch DVDs, and munch Oreos. It’s the same scenario for tens of thousands of others as well.
