3 Rules to Motivate yourself to learn Thai

There is no magic pill you can pop that will have you speaking Thai in Days it actually requires some hard work and effort to be able to speak Thai. No matter what boors you buy or programs you try you still have to sit through monotonous lessons either by yourself with a tutor or in class. It all requires that to speak Thai you actually have to apply yourself.Lack of really trying hard and somewhat laziness is probably the biggest reason most people who live in Thailand for years on end still can't speak Thai. I'm guilty of the same thing, I should be able to read Thai with much more fluency than I currently can but I'm too lazy to sit down and read more Thai books and watch more Thai movies, even the idea of doing that actually makes me sick.

Since I can speak Thai fluently already I can afford to be more lazy about it, but when I first started learning Thai I was motivated by one goal and that was to learn Thai as fast as I could. I wanted to learn Thai so bad I lived everyday learning and practicing as much as I could, I got sidetracked a number of times but in the end stayed focus. You actually need to want to learn Thai so bad that you forget about how boring it is and really put your heart into it.

Wanting something so bad that you'll do anything in order to get it is like the magic key to motivation. Whatever reason you have for wanting to learn Thai bring up those fealings and want it so much that your body aches if you still can't speak Thai. The following list are motivation rules I use to keep me improving my Thai.

3 Rules to Motivate yourself to learn Thai

1. Set a major goal but break it into small lengths

When I was programming I subscribed to the agile development philosophy which is basically a way of taking a large project and breaking it up into small tasks by breaking things down we are able to get more stuff done with defined goals and short targets. If you take that philosophy and apply it to learning a language you break the language learning task into smaller steps like the alphabet, foods, introductions etc. These smaller lessens improves the learning process and helps keep you motivated.

2. Finishing everything you start

When things are in smaller bite sized chucks they are easier to finish and as such if you start a lesson make sure you finish the lesson. When you finish a lesson you'll feel more rewarded even though you've only taken a small step to reaching your end goal this then motivates you to starting a new lesson sooner.

3. Take risks

When you do something that you've never done before you are bound to fall flat on your face. Learning a language involves taking a lot of risks, you have to say things wrong before you'll say them right. Don't be afraid to look stupid or say something wrong failure is a learning tool than can get you speaking Thai much quicker.

Once you learn to speak good Thai you'll have a much better experience in Thailand and will help you not only in relationships but in business and making friends. Find the one thing that is making you want to speak Thai and want it so bad that can set a firm goal to learn Thai.

I’m trying dude… I’m trying… one of the frustrating things I find is my Thai friends not speaking Thai! I can understand it to a certain extent as they must get bored listening to my Thai gibberish – but it don’t help ME!!! 🙁

She’s an angel, believe me, but don’t want to take any risk. I will not learn thai (not in a school at least, because this seems to be the problem) but i am very happy with all the rest….
