Chiang Mai is NOT boring

When I was down in Pattaya I met a lot of guys who asked me where I lived before I came down to Pattaya and so I told them that I spent the last 3 years living in Chiang Mai. Most responses I got was somewhere along the lines of "How could you do that?" Even on this blog I get a lot of guys telling me how boring Chiang Mai is and that the place is only for retired guys with their Thai wives. And while Chiang Mai still remains the idea place for retirees to come and live out their days how is it that day to day month to month I rarely meet those guys?

I certainly don't live in a bubble I'm out there meeting new people all the time, truth be told I meet and hang with more Thai people than I do Farang and I am never bored. Chiang Mai always has something to do if you get out there and do it. If your only idea of fun is hitting the beer bars or go go's then sure you'll get bored after about 2 weeks when all those girls know and recognise you, what you need to do is go live in Pattaya if that's all you want however Chiang Mai is so much more than whore mongering you can actually have a solid life here.

There is much more to life than just going to the clubs and bars picking up bar whores I and in Chiang Mai there is actually some cool things to do during the day. How about a ride out to the Mae Gnat Dam or the Mok Fah waterfall for something natural. Got a weekend off then do the Mae Hong Son loop I recommend this as one of the best rides in Thailand!

chiang mai is not boring

Can anyone guess where this is in Chiang Mai, the stage gives it away!

The past few years as seen the rise and rise of the 20-40 something guys moving to live in Chiang Mai, they've tried Phuket they've done Bangkok but they are now settling into Chiang Mai and why? Because it's life at a discount! If you make your money online be it as little as $1000 a month you can move and live in Chiang Mai and have a great time. It's easy to get around going out is super cheap in fact you can have an awesome night out pick up girls and it'll cost you less than 500 baht! Try and do that in Bangkok!

Now for those of you who think that Chiang Mai nightlife finishes at 1 am and all that is left to do is go to spicy you guys are so wrong! I've had super fun nights out with mates who see a totally different side to Chiang Mai and if your an old guy sure it's not really going to be the same but if your a young guy or at least young at heart man you can have some fun in Chiang Mai.

How about this night out in Chiang Mai:

10pm: Noodles at my favourite noodle shop. 30 baht each
10:30pm: Bottle of pipers and mixers and talked to the hot Chang Girls 250 baht each
12 midnight:  At my favourite underage club in Chiang Mai (sorry guys this isn't listed on the Chiang Mai mongers map)! 160 baht each (we took the bottle).
3 am: Took 3 girls with us to eat at the late night bar ate dinner 5 of use 200 baht each
4 am: Went to late night karaoke with some rather good dancing girls another bottle 600 baht each
7 am: Went to Sai Baht with the monks at Suthep market 30 baht
7:30 am Back At home.

Now I made the mistake of taking the girls we got at the club to go eat instead of straight to the short time hotel of course after they ate they were ready to go home! Not that it matters really still my point here is Chiang Mai is not boring.

How about this night out I had with one of my best mates:

10pm Go to the Santitum brothel 1100 baht price includes room with a good looking milky white Chiang Mai girl 20y/o (sorry guys again I don't list this place on the Chiang Mai nightlife map).
11:30pm Infinity meet up with some CMU girls buy bottle at 7/11 cost between me and my mate 700 baht each
3:30pm Girls are drunk take them to Short time hotel for more fun another bottle at 7/11 for 500 baht, room costs 800 baht for 4 hours
8am get home

Now this kinda night out is more more expensive but still way cheaper and way more fun than I'd have in Pattaya or Bangkok. Try and do all that in Bangkok or Pattaya for 2500 baht!

If you think the only places left to hang late night in Chiang Mai is Zoe and Spicy then you've still got lots to learn about Chiang Mai.

I must admit the first thought was ‘what’s the point in posting on a blog then saying it’s a secret’ – two places mentioned then it’s ‘they are not on the map’

Like I havn’t given away enough information for free already! Everyone keeps telling me to stop giving away information for free I don’t get paid for anything so i’m starting to realize they are right. Anyone wants to know where this place and wants to go buy a bottle and mixers at the club and i’ll take you 😉

        That’s fair. Where and when?

      • Quick Question June 21, 2012 at 6:51 am #

If a we bring a girlfriend and make her pay for the bottle and mixers, do we get a bonus spot revealed? Or is that only worth a high five?

Does your g/f have a cute friend to bring along too? lol

“Now I made the mistake of taking the girls we got at the club to go eat instead of straight to the short time hotel of course after they ate they were ready to go home”

Shit happens, at least every day is a good story / learning experience.

You made me realise though that if you want the quality girls, it’s SO important to speak Thai. I took that girl I showed you on my phone to Warm Up last night (took some friends who speak Thai & English) and though we were vibing really well, laughing & joking, there’s only so far you can go with 5 minutes of vocabulary in your brain.

Then again, I like the motivation.

    Remember what I said 😉

3 months bro and you can do it if you put the effort in! I also remember another thing you said, you wouldn’t introduce me to the girl! lol.

        Haha, and I mean it

I will still kick it Bangkok over the sticks of Pattaya and Chiang Mai any day of the year. City person my whole life.

    • Quick Question June 21, 2012 at 7:10 am #

Oh come on now… if you like to rock the Chang Beer singlet, then Pattaya is the place!

    Chris,
Love Chiang Mai spent two months there over Christmas last year. I hope to get back again this November for a six month stay. Even for a old guy like me the food, weather and people are all great. It puts back something in my life that I thought had lost forever. So, please keep up the blog, the maps and the pics.
    Take care.

I highly recommend the Gekko Bar in CM for drinking. 3 LG Singha, Chang or Leo 170/180 baht, and B-52s -45 Baht. The food is good too, with a nice Saturday beef rib steak special for 160 baht. I let Chris tell you where it is. Prices are very good in CM. I like to visit the King’s retreat up past Doi Suthep. Its a nice drive, the temps are nice up the hill, and gardens are beautiful. I would like to join the meditation classes at Doi Suthep someday also. Pattaya is goofy, good for a holiday.

    • Chris June 24, 2012 at 4:47 pm #

I can get 3 large leo as Blah Blah Blah for 140baht and eat noodles next door for 30 baht. But Gekko is very popular with the expats i go for the burgers sometimes.

Myself, I don’t get much out of paying extra at Bars to watch bargirls do their thing. The conversation sounds like a broken record! This is why you probably don’t see to many retired 50 something guys. When you get older, one is enough! Dance clubs are ok, though, if the music is good. I wasn’t in CM long enough to find any.

i am a retired us airforce pilot but now working as pilot instructor in abu dhabi. i will be retiring soon and considering to retire in chiangmai. a friend of mine recommended these site of thailand lawyers to guide me through the process, are they any good?

    • Chris June 29, 2012 at 5:23 pm #

not sure and I don’t think you need a lawyer unless your circumstances are strange. Hit me up with an email let me help you out.

      • VTwinAhmnaht October 26, 2012 at 4:57 am #

Hey Chris, do what you can to get this guy out of the frame of mind that he needs a lawyer, unless one can find a Saul Goodman (lawyer from Breaking Bad) to call their own then a lawyer is completely unnecessary unless he wants to start a business or build a house in which case he should cool his jets and observe things for a couple of years and see if these things are still viable options. Thailand is full of guys who come here and blow their loads trying to build the dream house or get into business and just end up broke and taken sittin is some shitty bar on some shitty street surrounded by skanks tryin’ to figure out if this guy has anything left to be milked of. Best of luck to ya Cgary and soon enough…Welcome to the gongshow 🙂

i live on Loi Kroh across from the Garden Restaurant and Guest House. Looking to find new places to troll now that 2 year relationship with beautiful bargirl seems to be over. Yaba the culprit as well as tortured life in Fang. What a waste. Plus she still has the perfect boobs I bought her. !! 555
